Thinking of taking your first course with us? If so, here are some quick answers to
questions often asked by students like you:
Are UW Independent Learning courses accredited, and will
they transfer to other institutions?
Our faculty and instructors are affiliated
with UW institutions that are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and are members of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Before enrolling, check with your campus adviser about the transferability of the
Independent Learning courses you are considering.

What types of credit do you offer? Do you offer courses for
graduate credit?
We offer courses for university credit (undergraduate-level), continuing education units for personal and professional development, and high school credit. We do not offer courses for graduate credit.

Do you offer financial aid, and can you sign my student loan
deferment form?
We cannot participate
directly in state or federal financial aid programs. Contact your campus adviser
to see if your Independent Learning courses may be
considered as part of your semester or quarter course load.

What about tuition waivers?
Tuition for Independent Learning undergraduate-level courses may be waived or reduced if you are also taking on-campus UW classes. Check with your campus student services office to see if you qualify. In order to receive a waiver, you must provide Independent Learning with: (1) an official UW campus form or letter indicating permission has been granted for the waiver, (2) proof that you have paid your campus tuition in full, with an indication of the amount paid, and (3) the number of UW campus credits you are carrying.

How much do your courses cost, and how do I pay for them?
Tuition is indicated in the catalog listing for each course. Fees are in effect from July 1
through June 30 of each year and are subject to change. Payment is by check, money order, Visa,
MasterCard, or American Express. There is also a nonrefundable administrative fee for each
course.

How do I get my books and materials?
Your course materials (books, course guide, and other materials) are handled by MBS Direct.
MBS carries an inventory of new and used textbooks, with easy buyback procedures.

You can register anytime. Register online, by telephone, or, if you have one of our print
catalogs, by completing the application form at the back of the catalog and mailing or faxing

How do I submit lessons?
Lessons for print-based Independent Learning courses should be sent by surface mail, airmail, or fax. Many of our courses now
have an e-mail submission option and many others are online.

What is the e-mail option?
The e-mail option is used in many Independent Learning courses. It allows you to send and receive your assignments electronically.

Where and how do I take exams?
Our exams are proctored (supervised). If you live near our Madison, Wisconsin,
office, you may take your exams here. If you’re unable to do so, you must find your
own proctor, who probably will be a librarian, a principal, or a guidance counselor from a local high school, or an academic adviser or professor from a local college or university. More information about who may serve
as a proctor is available in the Student Handbook and on the
exam request forms.

How long do I have to complete my course? What if I need
an extension?
You have one year from the date of your registration to complete your course. If you need more time, you may contact Student Services to
request a three-month extension ($100 per course), at least one month before the course expiration
date. You may request a second three-month extension ($200 per course), as long as total
time does not exceed 18 months.
